Alpha Related Programming Projects

  • Fix glibc so that the test suite passes
  • optimizations for ioquake3
    • Implement Virtual Machine for Alpha. See vm_*.c in qcommon/ and the Quake 3 Virtual Machine (Q3VM) Specifications. LLVM may be worth considering, as it would provide VMs for X86, X86-64, PowerPC 32/64, ARM, Thumb, IA-64, Alpha, SPARC, MIPS and CellSPU.
    • generate GLSL from the Q3A shaders and push all the vertex data into VBOs. This would eliminate the slowdown due to the PCI bottleneck. See this mail to the ioquake3 mailing list

More Research Needed

  • Did a UP1200 exist? See references one and two
  • Is there documentation other than the Product Brief for the PC164RX? Aaron Sakovich (of AlphaNT.com) says there were problems with the chipset that limited the CPU's max frequency.
