* Alpha Key to Compaq Growth

  Compaq has written a letter to its customers and shareholders stating that "Alpha is absolutely key to our profitable growth and market leadership in the Business Critical Server segment." The original release is available on the Compaq website.

* CivCTP for Alpha
September 30th 1999
  Loki Entertainment Software has released a beta version of Civilization Call to Power for AlphaLinux. The beta requires glibc2.1 and has been tested on kernel version 2.2.11 and 2.3.18 (evidently 2.2.12 has a TCP/IP bug that can cause problems with the game). The patch can be downloaded from the Loki updates page.

* Compaq Offers Access to AlphaLinux Systems
September 22nd 1999
  Compaq is offering developers access to AlphaLinux systems featuring the beta builds of the Compaq C and Fortran compilers. They have released this press release announcing the availability and developers can sign up at www.testdrive.compaq.com. Also available are systems running Tru64Unix version 5.0.

* KDE 1.1.2 RPMS
September 21st 1999
  KDE 1.1.2 RPMS & SRPMS for RedHat 6.0 AlphaLinux are now available for download at ftp.alphalinux.org. Please read the README file before downloading.

* ftp.alphalinux.org back online!
September 19th 1999
  Due to some problems with our last daemon we have taken the archive down until the problems could be resolved. We are happy to say that the archive is back online at ftp.alphalinux.org. We are very sorry for the downtime of the archive.

* SuSE Security Updates
September 18th 1999
  SuSE has released two security warning for it's SuSE Linux. The first involves lynx-2.8.2 and older, an update is available from ftp.suse.com. The second involves proftpd, at the time of the announcement an update was not ready, and SuSE is recommending that due to the problems with proftpd a different ftp server be used until these issues are resolved.

* Compaq to end Tru64 on Merced Port?

  CNet is running an article speculating that Compaq will drop it's port of Tru64Unix for Merced, and instead sell Monterey on the IA-64 chips while keeping Tru64 only on Alpha.

* HPTi wins AlphaLinux Cluster for NOAA
September 17th 1999
  The Forecast Systems Laboratory, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has signed a deal with HPTi (HIGH PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGIES, INC) for an AlphaLinux cluster. More information is available from this press release from HPTi.

* SuSE Releases Updated Pine
September 16th 1999
  SuSE has released an updated version on Pine for suse-axp. The update fixes IMAP support that was broken by a previous update. The new rpm is available from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/axp/update/6.1/n1/pine.rpm.

* More RedHat 6.0 Updates
September 14th 1999
  RedHat has released several new updates to RH 6.0 over the past few weeks. Including XFree86-3.3.5, vixie-cron, am-utils, wu-ftpd, mars-nwe and inn. As ftp.alphalinux.org is still unavailable the files can be retrieved from http://www.alphalinux.org/ftpsite.

* Problems with AlphaLinux.org
September 7th 1999
  As some of you may have noticed, we've been having some problems lately with alphalinux.org, specifically ftp.alphalinux.org. While we don't have an ETA for a fix (we are working on it), for the moment we do have a temporary workaround. If you want to access the files in ftp.alphalinux.org they are all available from http://www.alphalinux.org/ftpsite.

* Compaq C Compilers Enter Beta <../img src="img/sr.gif">

  Compaq has released a beta version of it's C compiler for AlphaLinux. The beta is available from the Compaq Linux Software homepage. Also available is an updated beta of the Fortran beta compiler with CXML (Extended Math Library).

* 21364 and Tru64/RT speculations
September 6th 1999
  The Register has an interesting article on 21364/EV7 features. Mentioned are lockstepping in MP systems, 128-bit Rambus channels, and possible use of a realtime/embedded (RT) version of Tru64 in arcade game consoles. Maybe true, maybe not, but certainly something to daydream about.
