  The Compaq C++ compiler for AlphaLinux has entered the public beta period. Users can register and download the package from www.unix.digital.com/linux/compaq_cxx.

  Spike is coming to Linux/Alpha!

Spike is a post-link optimizer originally developed for AlphaNT which is currently being ported to Linux/Alpha.

* RedHat 6.2 released...but not for Alpha

  RedHat has released RedHat 6.2 but yet again there's no Alpha release along with the i386 and SPARC. RedHat's web page on 6.2 states "Intel and SPARC® products shipping April 10; Alpha not yet available."

* Compaq offering Linux Integration and Performance course

  Compaq has developed a Linux Integration and Performance course for both Intel/Linux and Intel/Alpha. A full description of the Alpha course can be found here. The courses will be held at the end of April.

* LWN Feature on 'Jet'

  LWN is running a feature article on the new 'Jet' cluster at the NOAA Forecast Systems Laboratory. The cluster currently consists of 276 Compaq XP1000 systems with plans to double the nodes by late summer.

* New SRM Howto Released

  A new version of the SRM Howto has been released. Updates include:
  • Made the installation hints a new chapter
  • Added information on Netbooting
  • Added to the new section on RedHat 6.1 and BSD disklabels
  • Removed David Mosberger-Tang's name from the authors list
  • Marked a few of the feature as being in 0.6 only
  • Added info for SuSE 6.3 and RedHat 6.1
  • Moved the notes on MILO vs. SRM to an "About this document" section
  • Added sections on switching to SRM, and basic SRM usage
  • Added section on the new interactive use of aboot
  • Updated the note on DOS partition tables to mention the Red Hat 6.1 installer's behavior.
  • Normalized the markup, and codified the conventions used for user-entered commands.
  • Corrected the notes on BSD disklabels (SRM does not read BSD disklabels, it's just that they don't conflict with the boot block).

* Seti at Home Update

  Seti At Home has released version 2.4 of the client for AlphaLinux. It's available from setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/unix.html and has now been compiled using the Compaq ccc compiler.

* MILO Enters SourceForge

  Stefan Reinauer has entered MILO-2.2 into SourceForge. It's available through either milo.sourceforge.net or through SourceForge itself.

* 1U Testdrive Program at Compaq

  Compaq's TestDrive program has added some Slates (or 1U machines) to the available systems. Currently there are four machines running Tru64 V5.0, FreeBSD 4.0, RedHat Linux 6.1 and SuSE 6.3, with Debian and NetBSD on the way.

* Slackware Port for AlphaLinux?

  Slashdot is running an interview with Patrick Volkerding, the founder of Slackware According to the interview they have several Alphas on site for development work, including a dual CPU machine from API.

* New MILO Available

  MILO version 2.2-16 has been released. Changes include:
  • Cleaned up much unneccesary stuff. Should not break that easy when changing 2.2.x kernels now.
  • milo is about 20k smaller than the -15 release
  • Made free bios emulation work with Milo-2.2 again. (to be replaced soon)
  • fmu compiles again. Use with care!

  Compaq has posted this article on the design of the IA-64 chip versus Alpha, the current state of the 21264 CPU and what the future holds with the 21364 CPU (EV7).

* Quick updates

  Here come the quick updates, quickly! We have the beginnings of an AlphaLinux jobs section, submissions welcome. This past week saw the addition of Philip Ezolt to our hovel on the web. Phil is spear-heading the efforts of a central location for games and cool demos on AlphaLinux. Welcome, Phil!

* RTLinux for Alpha

  LinuxDevices.com is reporting that fsmlabs and Compaq have signed an agreement to port the RTLinux operating system over to Alpha.

* C++ for AlphaLinux enter pre-beta

  According to this page at Compaq the C++ compiler for AlphaLinux is entering a pre-beta period. The files are not yet available, but you can register to be notified of their release.

* New Milo Released

  Stefan Reinauer has released a new version on MILO, version 2.2-15. It compiles with new binutils and kernel 2.2.14 or newer and the code has been cleaned up a bit. It's available from http://www.freiburg.linux.de/~stepan/Milo/ and from ftp.alphalinux.org.

* Slate Makes First Appearance

  Compaq Custom Systems has posted information on AlphaServer "1U form factor" Server Platforms that appear to be racks of 1U DS10s (also known as Slate). However there still seems to be no info on Slate from the products page.

* SuSE Security Update to htdig

  SuSE has released an updated htdig package due to a potential remote compromise on versions 3.1.5 and earlier. Updates are available for both SuSE AXP 6.1 and SuSE AXP 6.3 from ftp.suse.com.
