* March 31st 1999
  Alpha Processor Inc. has announced the winner of their Alpha Workstation giveaway. More information can be found on the Alpha Processor website.

Cnet is running an article on the upcoming Alpha products from Compaq. The article includes some rather discouraging quotes from RedHat's Bob Young.

* March 24rd 1999
  egcs-1.1.2 has been packaged into rpms and is now available at ftp.alphalinux.org. Please read the README file in that directory to install it correctly. If you have any questions you can email me. -Peter
* March 23rd 1999
  Cnet is running a piece on Compaq using Linux to increase Alpha sales. Included in the article is a rumor of Pacific HiTech making an Alpha port.
* March 20th 1999
  SuSE is evidently handing out copies of SuSE 6.1 beta for the Alpha at CeBit in Hannover, with the final product having an intended ship date in May.
* March 18th 1999
  Uncle George has released version 4 of the Java 1.2 development kit for AlphaLinux. You can find it at ftp.alphalinux.org.
* March 17th 1999
  We have it from a reliable source that MetroLink (MetroX) will not be porting their Metro Extreme 3D (OpenGL) X servers over to the Alpha. They are citing a lack of market for selling the product. However the good news is that Xi Graphics has started work on a hardware-accelerated AcceleratedX OpenGL server product for AlphaLinux. So if you are interested in the success of OpenGL on Alpha we encourage you to write to Xi Graphics about this and tell them that there is a market for their product.
* March 13th 1999
  From the rumor department we have a couple of interesting news items.

First is that SuSE alpha distribution will be released next week.

Second is that Compaq has sold it's TOEM division. In the words of one Compaq employee "OEM is not part of Compaq's business model" The likely buyer at this point seems the be IBM. Rumor has it that they are interested in producing Alpha motherboards, chipsets and possibly CPUs.

* March 9th 1999
  We'd like to welcome our newest member to our fast growing organization. Daniel J. Frasnelli joined us last week in our quest to increase the use of both Linux and the Alpha Processor. His interests include cryptography, security, and distributed systems.

Debian 2.1 (slink) has been released on schedule. Release notes and install instructions are available for Alpha. We'll pull down a copy of this onto ftp.alphalinux.org as soon as possible. Update 03-09-99 Debian-Slink is now available at ftp.alphalinux.org.

* March 8th 1999
  Kernel version 2.2.3 has been released. This includes the fixes for Alpha that stopped 2.2.2 from compiling.
* March 5th 1999
  Just a warning to everybody that on Saturday March 6th we are going to be performing some hardware maintenance so www.alphalinux.org and ftp.alphalinux.org may be unavailable for parts of the day.
* March 3rd 1999
  The Register has an article on the Alpha. Rumor has it that it'll be able to clock speeds of 1.4GHz by the end of 2001 and reach speeds of 1100MHz by the end of this year.

If you're interested in games, it seems the upcoming Civilization (Call to Power) game will be ported to Alpha. Has anybody seen this game yet at LinuxWorld Expo?

Compaq has released a Portable Math Library (CPML) for AlphaLinux. Compaq claims the library is faster than the standard Linux libm and "with a few exceptions" is faster than libffm. You must register before downloading the library.

Compaq has put out this press release detailing additional support for Linux. It also mentions that Compaq has donated a AlphaServer DS20 system to Linus for Linux development.

* March 2nd 1999
  Siamese Systems had released some 8-pack cases that holds up to 8 Alpha motherboard in one case.

* March 1st 1999
  Debian 2.1 codename slink has been released for Intel, Alpha, Amiga, Atari, and Sparc. That makes two officially released Alpha distributions with more on the way. ftp.alphalinux.org will be mirroring slink for Alpha shortly. Update 03-02-1999 The release of slink has been delayed by a week due to problems with dkpg. The release is now scheduled for release on March 9, 00:00 GMT.

There's a patch courtesy of Oliver Soell that allows UDMA patches for the 164sx to compile on Alpha. You can either download his patches to the UDMA driver, or download the UDMA driver with the patch already applied.

The Alpha FAQ has been updated to version 1.1.5.

We've added a page with information on known problems in RedHat 5.2. This includes the RedHat errata list as well as other problems that haven't been reported by RedHat yet. If you know of any other RedHat 5.2 problems please send in a description and we'll see they get added to the list.

ftp.alphalinux.org now has the necessary RPMs for you to update the kernel 2.2.x. You can find these in the /pub/AXP/redhat/updates/kernel directory.
