* New Gnumeric and Enlightenment Packages
July 26th 1999
  RedHat has released updates to Gnumeric and Enlightenment. There is a security problem with the Gnumeric package shipped with RH6.0 and Enlightenment can cause problems with certain Java programs. Updates are available from ftp.alphalinux.org.

* New Samba Packages
July 23rd 1999
  RedHat has released new Samba packages for RedHat 5.2 and 6.0 for Alpha. This fixes several security problems with the original package. Updates are available from ftp.alphalinux.org.

* SuSE AXP (German) Released
July 12th 1999
  SuSE has released SuSE AXP for the German market. At the moment there's no information on when the international version will be available though it seems that anybody purchasing the SuSE 6.1 for AXP will receive a free upgrade to the next SuSE release in September. * Copper Alphas from IBM?

  The Register is running a short article on IBM producing copper Alphas next year for both Compaq and Alpha Processor Inc.

* Compaq To Spend 100 Million on Alpha/Unix
July 7th 1999
  According to several articles in the press, Compaq is to spend an additional $100 million dollars on Alpha and Tru64Unix (formerly Digital Unix). More details can be found in this article at CMP's Tech Web.

* RedHat and API Giving Away Alpha System

* API and Atipa Linux Solutions Ink Deal
July 1st 1999
  Alpha Processor Inc. (API) and Atipa Linux Solutions have signed a deal for Atipa to start selling Alpha based system. A press release for the deal can be found at NewsAlert.com.

* Compaq Releases Fortran Beta
July 1st 1999
  Compaq's Fortran for Linux Alpha Systems now available for Beta test!

Compaq is very pleased to announce the beta availability of its industrial strength, highly optimized Fortran 95 compiler. This compiler as well as a Fortran 90 capable debugger and tuned math library is immediately available for test and evaluation on Linux Alpha based systems. All interested customers are invited to register as beta testers and download the software from http://www.digital.com/fortran/linux/

The Alpha optimized Fortran compiler and math libraries have been developed in response to customer demand from the High Performance Technical Computing (HPTC) community and will provide the Linux technical community with tools for getting the best Alpha performance.

Compaq is partnering with the University of New Hampshire(UNH) to provide an innovative support approach for its Linux Alpha based development tools. Beginning with the Beta program, UNH will be developing a peer support environment with information and tools available to solve customer problems.

Fortran is the first compiler available from Compaq for the Linux Alpha platform. Other compilers (including C and C++) are planned for the future.

* Another Update for 6.0
July 1st 1999
  RedHat has released another update for 6.0. This time it's an update to talk that allows it to work properly with ytalk. The update is available from ftp.alphalinux.org.
