Here's an interesting article from ZDNET in which they talk about Gateway using AMD's chip instead of Intel's. The interesting part is about half way down the page where they talk about Gateway using the up and coming AMD K7 chip, which as we all know will be socket compatible with the Alpha. So, does this mean you'll be able to call up Gateway and order an Alpha machine, with Linux?

We now have a JDK 1.2 (Java 2) port to AlphaLinux, available from http://www.voicenet.com/~gatgul/JDK/1.2.

For people interested in the Icon programming language, Tim Patti has provided us with some directions and tips for using the language under AlphaLinux. His directions can be found in the software section.

4Front Technologies has announced a new release of Open Sound System (OSS) for AlphaLinux (thanks to Oliver Soell).

On the hardware front the DP264 (that's the new dual 21264 motherboard) comes out on Monday with a single processor version on the way, and the LX board is going back into limited production run.

Well it's finally arrived. Kernel 2.2 has appeared on kernel.org and it's mirrors.

The downtime has been rescheduled for today at 8:00am (PST). Hopefully we should only be down for about 10 minutes.

We've started to archive the Debian-Alpha mailing list. Available from the archives section.

On the cluster project I just heard that the telephone company has installed the equipment so we should soon have a mailing list address for everybody. As soon as I know it I'll be sure to pass it on.

There here! Banners that is. For good or bad we've setup them up.

RedHat has released XFree86 3.3.3.1 RPMs for Alpha. Available from ftp://updates.redhat.com/5.2/alpha.

Here's a page with some info on the up and coming 21364 Alpha processor.

I have finally had a chance to download the image files for the Ruffian install information and I've fixed the archiving of the axp-list. Hypermail was choking on one message that seemed to stop it from moving on.

From the rumors department: There has been talk on axp-list (and the alphant list I gather) that Compaq/Dec is going to produce C/C++ compilers for alphalinux.

For those of you interested in the cluster project. We are still moving along. The mailing list has been setup, however we are waiting for the telephone company to install a T1 line, once this is done we will post the address for subscribing to the list.

It seems like BSDI is creating a new platform that will run Linux. It is called Linux Application Platform (LAP). It will be included with the BSD derived releases of the BSD/OS operating system.

"LAP addresses the biggest barrier to widespread industry adoption of Linux applications -- the lack of a reliable, commercially supported operating system to run them on. BSDI's LAP also expands the market opportunity for Linux application software vendors at thousands of corporations, Internet Service Providers and network appliance developers worldwide where BSDI is used".

BSDI will be releasing LAP during the first quarter 1999. There is no mention if they will make a BSD like release of Linux, but this looks very encouraging with all the current distributions geared to the desktop machine.

There is no mention of what architecture LAP will run on, but because bsd/os is x86 I would guess x86. Feel free to email BSDI to find out more.

Well I'm back from my holiday. A big thanks to Barrett for providing updates while I was gone. I'm slowly plowing my way through my inbox so if you haven't heard back from me yet please don't be offended. News items so far:

Compaq has announced the availability of the Iprobe tool. There's a quick FAQ available to tell you what it is and what it does.

The FAQ has been updated. Thanks to Geerten Kuiper for the updates.

  Linux v2.2.0 Pre-release Information

Current Release: pre7

I have condensed down the news section on the pre-release kernels to this one news item.

There has been chatter on the linux-kernel list about pushing v2.2.0 into current Linux distros. A few interesting comments about small compatibility issues between the v2.2.0 kernel and a few major distributions caught my eye:

  • all
  • dmesg & klogd are not using larger kernel log size in new kernels (8192 bytes vs. 4096 bytes in v2.0).
  • Debian slink
  • acct package is incorrectly compiled on (with sys/acct.h instead of linux/acct.h, IIRC).
  • Debian slink
  • procinfo segfaults.
  • Debian slink
  • lsdev has problems.
If you know of more feel free to email me at: doxx@doxx.net (Barrett Lyon).
