There are some unofficial patches for for 2.2.2 that will let you compile and boot the kernel courtesy of Dan Frasnelli. The non-x86 patch takes care of the semaphores problem and the filter patch fixes the broken filter code. They both can be found here at ftp.alphalinux.org. -Peter

The good news is that kernel 2.2.2 has been released. The bad news is that it does not compile on Alpha.

There is a new rc5des client for AlphaLinux available at www.distributed.net.

It contains new and faster cores. The rc5-core is from Bernie Meyer and the DES-core is from Mr. Dworzak. Both are almost 50% faster than the last (very old) official AlphaLinux-releases.

Benchmarks from a 533 MHz 21164:

Benchmarking DES with 1*2^22 tests (4194304 keys):
		Completed in 0.00:00:00.62 [6,672,378.76 keys/sec]
		Benchmarking RC5
		Completed in 0.00:41:45.53 - [851,111.75 keys/sec]

The Register has posted a short yet interesting article today about how Compaq may possibly be attempting a 128-bit Alpha processor.

Here's Compaq's press release (in the U.K.) for the new AlphaServer DS20, it also includes price cuts of up to 45% on the existing AlphaServer line. The article also goes on to say "A key initiative is driving Alpha volume, by leveraging Compaq's economies of scale and by incorporating the Alpha 21264 processor into a full range of Compaq computing platforms."

Here's CNET's report on the new Alpha workstations and servers.

www.alpha-processor.com has redesigned their website and has posted this press release detailing the release of the 21264 chip into production.

Don't forget Compaq is also having announcements today. You can sign up for the live webcast at webevents.broadcast.com.

www.news.com has an article about the Compaq's annoucements today.

It seems that Compaq will release two new systems using 21264 technology. The project once code-named Monet is now officially called the XP1000. Along with Compaq, another Houston-based parent company is also pushing their new low-end DS20 server (using the same architecture).

Another interesting tidbit of information is that Digital Unix has been renamed to Tru64 Unix. Compaq obviously wants to absorb Digital's name as much as possible. I'm sure it will be a good product, but I will stick with my 64-bit Penguins. -Barrett
