Ruffian Install Directions

Floppy images for installation of Redhat 5.2 on UX systems(see disclaimer below)

Installation outline (see disclaimer below)

  • This procedure applies for a UX-based Alpha system with a single SCSI hard disk. If your configuration is different, you may need to adjust the commands appropriately.
  • Create floppies: prepare 4 DOS formatted diskettes. Use the command dd if=<filename> of=/dev/fd0 bs=1440k on the Unix-like machines or rawrite on PC. Please note, that there is an unconfirmed information, that for successful installation the floppies should be created on the Alpha, so floppies created on PC or other machines may not work correctly. Sounds weird, but I have an indirect evidence for that.
  • Turn on computer, wait for devices detection.
  • Insert milo disk and choose Run Command from ARCBIOS menu. Type the name of the command: a:ldmilo.exe. The milo image should load and dump you to the MILO prompt.
  • Insert kernel disk and at the milo prompt type boot floppy.
  • After some time the system will prompt you for ramdisk. Insert it, press ENTER.
  • This should bring you to the Redhat installation screen. Create the following disk partitions:
    a) Primary, with size 4MB and type "DOS >= 32MB", /dev/sda1
    b) Extended, over the rest of the disk, /dev/sda2
    c) Logical, with size 1-3 times RAM and type "Linux Swap", /dev/sda5
    d) Logical, over the rest of /dev/sda2 and type "Linux Native", /dev/sda6
  • Install Redhat. After the installation ends it will prompt you to insert the kernel disk to copy the kernel. Wait till reboot.
  • After everything stops, make a cold reboot.
  • Insert arcinst disk, choose "Run Command" -> a:arcinst.exe from ARCBIOS menu.
  • Use arcinst to format your small 4MB partition as DOS. After you are done, return to ARCBIOS.
  • Make a cold reboot.
  • Load MILO from floppy as before.
  • At the MILO prompt type: boot sda6:vmlinux.gz root=/dev/sda6. The Linux should load from the hard disk now.
  • Login as root.
  • Insert MILO floppy.
  • Mount floppy: mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
  • Mount /dev/sda1: mount -t msdos /dev/sda1 /msdos
  • Copy all files from floppy to partition: cp /mnt/floppy/* /msdos/
  • Unmount everything.
  • Shutdown and make a cold reboot.
  • In the ARCBIOS menu Create Environment Variable Set with System Partition -> "FAT File System" and type "Windows NT Workstation 4.00" Edit Environment variable set to contain something like
    LoadIdentifier = Linux
    OsLoader = scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)ldmilo.exe
    OsLoadFileName=\
    OsLoadOptions = boot sda6:vmlinux.gz root=/dev/sda6
    Return to boot options menu.
  • Reboot and load Linux from your hard disk.
