So, the fault is apparently SRM's. You can either
 - set it to autoboot and/or connect a serial terminal, provided that
   SRM remains in working condition after the BIOS emulation failure,
 - or replace SRM with AlphaBIOS.

Note that you won't be able to boot via aboot - you have to use MILO.
