Hi,
I am trying to install Mandrake 7.1 on an XL266. I have managed to get
through the installation but on reboot with
boot sda6:/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda6
the kernel boots then panics attempting to mount the root filesystem
with
udf: registering filesystem
request_module[block-major-8]: Root fs not mounted
VFS: Cannot open device 08:06
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:06
I figure that the kernel installed is a modular kernel and it is looking
for the SCSI module or the SCSI disk module. Is this correct?
Well, assuming that is correct, I had a look at the files on sda6
by booting an earlier installation of RH 5.1 (which uses partitions sda1
and sda5 on that machine).
Mounting sda6 on /mdk, I looked at /mdk/etc/conf.modules. Since there
was no block-major-8 I added
alias block-major-8 scsi_hostadapter
where scsi_hostadapter was already aliased (correctly) to ncr53c8xx.
During the Mandrake installation I noticed that a module called sd_mod.o
had been loaded, but I could not find it in /mdk/lib/modules/2.2.15/*.
So I extracted it out of the cdrom image in /images/cdrom.rdz from the
Mandrake 7.1 CD-ROM and copied it to
/mdk/lib/modules/2.2.15/scsi/sd_mod.o
On booting (with boot sda6:/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda6) the situation
was unchanged.
Can anybody shed any light on this or point me in the right direction?
Thanks for any help.
Cheers
Dany
BTW the installation failed on both Custom and Expert, it would only go
through with Automatic.
