So I was sitting here peacefully, when an old employer/friend
calls me up and asks if I can 'clean up' the Alpha systems I build for
her a couple of years ago. Being the nice guys that I am, I said yes.
Whoa, what did I get myself into??
First off, I now live in a city 5 hours drive away from these
systems, which makes for a problem when you just 'gotta run down and
reboot
a system "hon" be back in...'.
These systems are Alpha-XLT 366 systems in full production mode at a
medium sized ISP. They were installed with redhat 5.2 about 22 months
ago.
They have been updated with the packages from redhat as they came
available.
What I would like to do is upgrade from egcs and glibc 2.0 to a
decent gcc-2.95.xx and glibc 2.1.xx . Please correct me if I am wrong,
but
the newer libraries/compilers seem to have some significant improvements
for
AXP systems over the older libraries/compilers.
Is there anyone out there that has successfully (and relatively
painlessly) migrated the compiler/library environment on a similar
system?
Any help/dodged bullets would be a GREAT help...
Cheers
Chris Price
