printer port not auto detected?

  I have ben having trouble gettingmy printer to pring on my Alpha 164LX linux
6.0 system.

  I think it might be the parport device. When i install freshly via the red
hat installer, it cannot auto detect any printer ports. Could this be because of
parport? I am thinking of recompiling the kernel without parport device to try to
get my printer to work...anyone else had problems like this?
