Some of the old adaptec cards had a strange habit, you had to first turn
on the machine and THEN the external devices. You also had to turn on the
external device before the adaptec card got to it's initialisation point
in the bios. Any other order and the thing wouldn't go thus a power down
and power up sequence required a person to be there. (thats where I
learned not to like adaptec cards)

This runs contrary to typical start procedure for scsi (start all external
devices and then boot the box). The other thing that I have seen as that
the internal termination is bad. This is a real pain in the butt when it
happens when your set up to be terminated on the scsi card itself (i.e.
new card time).

Some suggestions : Always use externally terminated devices
        where possible & pratical.
        Always keep a spare terminator.
If converting from SCSI III to SCSI II or SCSI I put the slowest
device at the end of the chain.

Pay attention to power up order and SCSI IDs. Remember the controller has
an ID. I've seen more than one install where something doesn't work and
the tech is tearing his hair out because he has a SCSI device with the
same ID as the SCSI card!
