I completely agree with you there, but it's like a mouse trying to take on a
buffalo. You end up doing what you have to in order to keep your mail
servers running.

mail servers and delivery agents in no way "should" have to squash
silly scripting viruses.

This is a huge fallacy that has become common practice simply because
a certain company could not be arsed (up until recently) to fix it's
products... and we've let them away it.
