I strongly suspect that this may have to do with space limitations which
allow only for a rather simple-minded PCI detection code. If it matches
something on a hard-coded list then fine. Otherwise you are out luck.
Or maybe writing something smarter so close to a "bare metal" is not
that simple? OTOH a kind of "use that driver because I am telling you
so" hook in SRM could likely have gone a long way towards alleviating
many woes. Maybe not the most convenient, especially for newbies, but
better something like that than nothing.
Oh, I can hardly be counted as someone having "woes" with SRM but a
greater flexibility would be indeed very desirable.
