Subject: xterm causes X to freak-out

Wondering if anybody else has experienced this problem. After some
initial problems with getting X started after an upgrade from 5.0 to 6.0
(had to switch from XFree86-Mach64 under 5.0 to XFree86-S3 under 6.0 for
some reason), things seem to be working... except whenever an xterm or
nxterm is started (to be displayed locally), X goes ballistic (99.9% CPU
usage) and the machine more or less hangs. The only way I have found to
bring things back under control is to reboot the machine.
The problem occurs under either a gnome-session or fvwm session. However,
the gnome-terminal works fine. Also, xterms can be run and displayed on
another machine without problem. I haven't experimented with too many
other terminals yet. Failures are very expensive time-wise. Is this
simply a bug in XFree86? I noticed that during reboot, the xfs service
failed to stop correctly, and I'm not sure if this is related.
Here are the relevant rpms that I can think of:
% rpm -qa | grep XFree*
XFree86-100dpi-fonts-3.3.3.1-49
XFree86-Xnest-3.3.3.1-49
XFree86-Xvfb-3.3.3.1-49
XFree86-75dpi-fonts-3.3.3.1-49
XFree86-xfs-3.3.3.1-49
XFree86-S3-3.3.3.1-49
XFree86-libs-3.3.3.1-49
XFree86-3.3.3.1-49
XFree86-devel-3.3.3.1-49
