Well, the problems have gotten worse. I tried going back and
compiling a new 2.2.18 to replace the 2.2.16 that I *had* been
running. It crashed *hard*.

I don't know what happened. I'd left the room after I started "make
boot," and came running back when I heard the machine beep *much*
earlier than I'd planned. There were the remnants of what appeared to
be some kind of segfault or core dump, with hex all over the screen.

I can't get the machine to come up in any kind of usable mode, even
when booting from a MILO floppy - I've even turned the damn thing off
and cold-booted to MILO.

I can get into ARC, but any time I try loading a kernel (even the
MILO!) I get strings of odd characters across the screen, and it dies
a horrible death, even to a "beep" that I interpret as a scream...

If I'm going to rebuild this whole system from scratch, I'm going to
replace the RAM first. After that, I'm wondering whether it's a good
idea to keep going with RedHat, or try going with the SuSE
distribution - has anyone tried SuSE that would offer an opinion on
it?
