Not to encourage this thread any further, but doesn't it strike anyone
as odd that people unfamiliar with the concept of automated mailing
lists manage to get themselves subscribed in the first place, much
less to technically-oriented ones? They can't have gotten here by
sending "SSSSUUUBBBBBSSSSSCCCCRRIIIBBBBEEEE" to everyone on the list.
Yeesh. I believe that would be why the attitude.

To reach these people, you'd probably have to use an all-caps banner
at the beginning of each message, explaining that they're on an
automated list, that the URL is where they should go to remove
themselves or get more information, and that no human person is likely
to do it for them. Footers don't work if they aren't verbose enough
or people don't scroll down, and mail headers don't work if mail
clients hide them.

Of course this all looks pretty silly in web archives or thru a news
gateway. If this list is news-gatewayed, the email unsubscription
procedure could most thoroughly confuse a casual news reader (say, for
example, someone who uses Deja) who happens to have "subscribed" to
the newsgroup instead of the list.
