Files like that need to be rotated. "Cleaning" is usually not a good idea
(assuming you mean either truncating, or deleting and then recreating it).
An easy fix might be to checkout /etc/logrotate.conf (assuming Red Hat)
and create an entry similar to the one for wtmp.
