I tried following Antonio's suggestion.
I've rebuilt the new kernel, rebuild and installed the taper program.
I still get segmentation faults.

Anyone got any suggestions on how to fix this, or for an alternate backup
program.

Thanks

Iain

Hi,

   I had an AlphaServer 400 4/166 running RH6.1, I had a NCR 53c810 on it
with a DEC TLZ07 tape drive. Just after the instalation I had the same
problem. Then after I recompile the kernel (and rebuild the taper RPM) it
works, or at least I can backup/restore from taper!

The only thing is that when taper starts to write the kernel (via SCSI
modules) give me a lot of errors:

     ncr53c810-0-<5,*>: FAST-5 SCSI 5.0 MB/s (200 ns, offset 8)
     taper: Exception at [<fffffc000041ae00>] (fffffc000041ae20)

    But the backup are made!

The strange think is that tar/dump/cpio can work with the tape without
problems!

                                            Antonio.
