I have almost that config and I had problems with
X messing up my tulip network card. I ended up
replacing the S3 with a ATI Rage Pro card.
I think there was an option something like
"no_pci_disconnect" that was supposed to help
but I had already replaced the S3 so it didn't
matter.
Also, what sort of SCSI hardware are you using?
I have a 2940UW and it is sensitive to what level
aic7xxxx is used. Some work, others don't. The
symptom of an incompatible aic7xxxx driver is a
lockup with no error messages, usually. Sometimes
it complains about trying to reset the channel too.
