Peter,

I've tried all combinations of VGA console and FB console activated.
- neither: boot hangs
- just fb: uses "dummy console": text screens just show the final output
from Milo (X is OK.)
- vga or both: text screen is black during boot, brown-on-blue when
switching back after X started (X itself is allright.)

I moved on to 2.2.0-pre3: results are the same, except it's now
grey-on-black, rather than brown-on-blue (a slight improvement, but mc
colors are even wilder now.)

Though the helptext for FBconsole states that it is needed for non-intel,
for my situation it doesn't seem to do anything useful.

Here's my graphics card: (the chip itself says Trio64V+ IIRC)
  Bus 0, device 5, function 0:
VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. Trio32/Trio64 (rev 84).
      Medium devsel. IRQ 18.
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0x14000000.
Board is PC164, 366 MHz
