Just my .02 Euro, as everybody else seems to favor OSS/Linux:
OSS/Linux doesn't explicitly support the UX and is available only for kernel
versions I did not get to run reliably on my board anyway, so I didn't try.
OTOH I got my SB64AWE (the SB part of it) to work within a few minutes, using
the OSS/Free driver in the kernel (as a module) and isapnp.
Since the UX has only one ISA slot you'd be hard pressed to find a configuration
that conflicts with anything.
I once borrowed a PCI SB (with the ESS1371); the driver correctly recognized the
chip, but I didn't get /dev/dsp or /dev/mixer to work (did not try too hard); the
driver seems to be not quite compatible with OSS.
