Hi Liam,
are you using SRM or AlphaBIOS?
Something similar happened to me with an avanti with SRM: after replacing a
DEC-card by an ATIxpert@work,
i just got a black screen, nevertheless some (invisible...) system activity.
I put back the old one, switched from srm to alphabios, installed the ati-card
once again and -voila- it worked!
In general, most ATI cards seem to work fine.
