True64 (Unix) and Linux, have incompatible partition requirements, although
both use bsd type labels. Put them on Different disks.

Subject: SRM: Keyboard, FreeBSD and multiple partitions
Hello !
I just switched to SRM using Compaq Jumpstart CD. Booting is much quicker
but the system is instable now (audio). The reason I switched was to
get multiple OS (versions) running (nut just 3 selections). I do have
encountered some problems doing this which I did not find references to
in the Jump-Start Docu or the alphalinux.org-docu.
1. Keyboard: I have a german keyboard and I was unable to produce an "|"
This is really anoying, since <shipt>-<Pg-Up> does not work either on
long output. Is there some trick for getting "|" ? I did find all
other required keys. Or is it possible to change to german keyboard ?
2. Does anyone share a disk Linux/FreeBSD ? When I browsed through the
documentation, I read that it needs its on disk. I already made
a partition for FreeBSD. Does the trick for True64 apply here as well,
i.e. do I have to completly repartition the disk ?
3. I cannot boot anything but the first partition. Heres my layout:
dka0 MS-DOS Style partition table (used to hold milo)
dqa0 Freshly BSD'd disk:
C: entire disk (except space at beginning)
A: currently RH 5.2, soon 6.2
B: currently RH 5.2 (should remain as backup)
D: empty
E: empty
if I say boot dqa0 the system boots, the same for boot dqa0 -fl "0"
Now I entered
3:2/vmlinux.srm.gz ro root=/dev/hda2
in /etc/aboot.conf (on A:) and tried to boot
boot -fl "3"
(with and without quotes). I also tried to boot right from the SRM
prompt (with -file) but the SRM always gets stuck in
jumping to bootstrap code.
I used the aboot from the jumpstart CD but later (as I belive) installed
aboot 7.a. The flag "i" (again, with our without quotes) does not
give me a prompt as state in the docus but stays at same message as with
any other flag (except 0).
4. I remember simmilar reports from Peter Petrakis about System stability.
When I use my ISA based AWE32 the system locks up after a short moemnt
(maybe a few minutes). Really hard, it is not returned to SRM. Are there
technical reasons that the "old" Alphabios had no problems running audio
for hours and the "current" SRM locks up or is there a possibly unseen
conflict which I could configure away ?
I have an LX with SCSI Adaptec-Controller, AWE32 Sound board, 128 MB RAM,
ATI Mach64 graphics board. If you need more info please ask or look at

Thanks
