Here's the first of many stupid Linux questions from a former NT/Alpha
person...
What is RPM? My only thought is automotive in nature...
A better question is probably: where is the FAQ?

Not the same guy, but I *do* have a scanner server in my home network using
sane. The installation was fairly trivial using RPM on my Intel box at
home,
and all my other Linux machines can use the scanner on my 486-based server.
To me, this was a big advantage, as I can continue with my work while the
scanner server takes care of the load. Using GIMP, at least, scanning this
way
is just like scanning from the local machine except the local machine
doesn't
bog down. :)
If you like, I can post later the steps I used to get the setup working.
I'd
start off looking for the latest sane RPMs...
One caveat, and it's probably just the fact that my (old Mustek) scanner
sucks -
sometimes I have to restart the scanning software between scans. As this
simply means selecting the acquire image menu option again, it's not that
big
of a deal to me.
