I have found pretty much the same thing --- several of the older kernels
failed compiling on RH6.0 UNLESS I selected SMP as an option
in the kernel (go figure)

But the newer 2.2.10 and 11 kernels compiled fine without any of
the nonsense... So, I think you will be fine if you get the new kernel.
