Pinging a normal address (1.2.3.4) should never return 'unknown host'.
Let's get past that first. Beyond that, what does /etc/nsswitch.conf
look like on the hosts line? What does /etc/resolv.conf look like?
Which driver are you using for your nic? tulip? de4x5? Which kernel
and what hardware?
