cdparanoia and generic SCSI

Has anybody had success running cdparanoia on an Alpha (I am particularly
interested on AS 200)? I compiled the program with no problems, but when I
run it, it claims that cannot access a CDROM drives were accessible. I read
the FAQ and the troubleshooting, manipulated a few permissions in /dev, and
now am wondering about something I read in the troubleshooting section. What
is support for generic SCSI? Apparently that may be the problem: I have not
built support for generic SCSI into my kernel (2.2.5). Inspecting my .config
file, I found under #SCSI low-level drivers an option (not set) of Generic
NCR5380. Is this the generic SCSI? Doing a search that was the only time
that generic and SCSI were associated in such file.
I would appreciate any help. Thank you.
