it seems to me that alpha has been beta testing the 1ghz cpu now
for about 1 1/2 - 2 years now.... I will have to say this alpha has it
together... The biggest diffrence between digital and Intel is
advertising... Intel does much more advertising than digital and
Intel's cpus show it in there price. I think Intel has the slowest cpus
on the market AMD & Cyrix both have cpu's that can out preform
the Intels and at 1/3 the price... Dec & Mips both still have the
fastest chips and with capabilitys to do SMP with more that 2 or 4
cpus.. Also Intels PII can only support at the most 2 megs of l2
cache and its built on to there slot 1 card and the chip is expenxive.
the 1 meg pII chip is going for $1575. the new dec chips can
support up to 8megs of L2 cache and you install the chips on board
of the mother board... I found a 533Mhz 21164A pc164UX4 with
4meg cache the server has 128meg ram 4.5gig uw scsi, zip drive
and a few other goodys for under $3000 for the complete system...
so I think dec is still at the top even there prices are not that bad...
