I am sorry, xntpd isn't the only problem. hwclock doesn't work either:
[[root@lem /etc]# hwclock --adjust --utc --debug
we have read epoch 1900 from /dev/rtc with RTC_EPOCH_READ ioctl.

In consequence the kernel is unable to mount the root partition (which
is on sda2).
