I think what he meant to say was, "commercially supported doesn't
necessarily have to mean proprietary software." qmail is a
great mail system, I use it at home and at work, and it can handle
tremendous loads securely and efficiently. It would probably be
trivial to find a way to read it via HTTP, since it defaults to
using Maildir, one could easily whip up some CGI scripts to
handle messages. There might be code for such an interface
somewhere at http://www.qmail.org/.

http://www.qmail.org/top.html#paidsup is the commercial level
support section, where many very competent and knowledgable companies
will provide commercial support for any problem you may have with
qmail. Some companies, like Crynwr (www.crynwr.com) might even
do any necessary customization of the software, if it needs it.
Try getting plain support from Microsoft, let alone someone willing
to customize the system itself.
