SANE build problems?

I just tried building sane-1.00 using egcs-1.1.2. The make died
doing abaton.c. It builds ok if I remove the abaton driver from
the ...backend/Makefile. Is this possibly an egcs thing?
Anyone have any success/failure experiences?
