Check /var/log/messages on a target machine after a failed attempt.
There is some information there what complains.

FWIW rsh command do not give problems with a setup similar to
yours. Maybe because my .rhosts entries are all of
<host> <account>
kind?

If you are not in a closed environment you most likely want
to use ssh instead of rsh anyway. ssh also redirects X.
(http://www.cs.hut.fi/ssh/).
