actually for me it looks like a "dir" was being given to the gatekeeper at
dec. the WS_FTP/windows pgm does not know any better manners, even though
i set it to "UNIX" host.

I was all set to test your new milo today, but for the first time
ever, I encountered a bug in gatekeeper.dec.com.  Here is a sample

220 gatekeeper.dec.com FTP server (Version 5.181 Fri Jun 16 12:01:35
PDT 1995) ready.
331 Guest login ok, send ident as password.
230 Guest login ok, access restrictions apply.
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
ftp> cd /pub
250 CWD command successful.
ftp> ls
200 PORT command successful.
550 /bin/ls: Operation would block.

I had first done this via emacs and netscape where the failure of ls
proved fatal.  Only later did I try ftp naked and realize that I
(unlike emacs and netscape) can retrieve the file without listing any
directories.  I now have the file but the scheduled down time for my
machine has long passed.  I use the machine as a web server and today
is the midterm for OS so I am loath to have an unscheduled down time.

I will try again on thurs when I am next at NYU

The reason for my funny schedule is that I am at NYU (Prof of CS) on
tues thurs, work at NEC Research 2 other days, and float on the fifth
(sometimes NYU, sometimes NEC, sometimes working at home).

I appologize for not realizing earlier that the gatekeeper failure was
trivially worked around.  I do appreciate your efforts and will test
the new milo.
