Redhat 4.0 : ftpd problems

Has anybody else noticed the wu-ftpd doesn't handle anonymous logins correctly ?
if one logs in as ftp and doesn't supply the correct password, the server hangs.

Trying to find the bug, i noticed it doesn't happen if debugging is turned on.

Anyways, if one has succeeded in logging in as anonymous, ls always returns
an empty directory. However, cd to directories that exist is possible.

Maybe that's all related to a chroot bug in kernel 2.0.21 ?
