Realaudio is the big one; they only supply binaries, and that won't
change. I don't know how long it will take them to do an alpha port. "If
ever" may be a bit strong, but I personally don't expect one quickly.

I also run the Mercantec shopping cart (http://www.mercantec.com/), and I
have not made any attempt to compile/run that on Linux/Alpha. Their
source is "shrouded", meaning that it would take a little time to get to
the source to hack it if need be. I'm not supposed to be doing that
anyway; they supply a source package that installs, compiles and then
deletes itself.

Stronghold (ApacheSSL -- http://stronghold.c2.net/) does not have an Alpha
port yet. I expect that they will eventually, but they don't yet; from
what I understand of Sameer he will make the software as widely available
as possible. I could offer to do a port for them, but that is not what
puts bread on my table.

I run the mSQL database server with Apache integrated PHP extensions. So
far mSQL has worked, but with the SSL Apache server out for now I can't
compile in the PHP to test it.

I did port my own POP server (hacked out of MH), but I had some trouble
with longs that had to be changed to ints. (I made my own POP server
because I needed APOP support before it was available in another server,
including Qualcomm's.)

Granted, the POP server port was not much of an issue, but it did point
out that there can be porting issues involved that may potentially be non
trivial to find.

I fully expect Linux/Alpha to be very viable in 6 months, and frankly I'll
be glad to see it happen. For some it may be great already, but right now
it is taking too much of my time to maintain the machine and pull it all
together. I'm in business to deliver Internet services, not build boxes.
I've already lost too much time trying to make it work, with a fair bit of
work in front of me still to really complete it, and I did not understand
this when I got into it. It came down to a business decision that I may
well revisit in the future; Linux/Alpha has some real potential.
