Two things: (1) as far as I know, "rdev" is Intel-only. It may or may
not be able to be made to work on Alpha, but I've never tried it.

(2) Even if rdev did work on Alpha, you can't do "rdev" on a .gz file. You
have to unzip the file, rdev it, then re-zip it.

Anyway, the preferred method of specifying the root filesystem is on
the boot command line: "boot sdb3:vmlinux.gz root=/dev/sdb3"
