I see that error message as well, and reconnecting the keyboard does _not_
solve the problem for me (166MHz UDB). This is with the original DEC
keyboard, which works flawlessly (through an adaptor) on the Pentium.

>(5pin DIN to 6pin DIN)
I have also tried two different keyboards through two different adaptors,
neither of them would even flash its LEDs at power-up. At least one of
these adaptors is working OK, as I use it for the PC164 machine.

And what to do in un-normal situations? I suspect that the socket is a bit worn
out and plan to do some resistance measurements soon --- but if everything
fails, is simply hooking something up to the serial line a viable solution?
