Cheers for the tip Maurice, I was using ls .*, and just ignoring
the . and .. lists. I also proved that it wasn't there by trying
to edit it with joe, which told me 'New File'. After much playing,
(the rsh man page says nothing about this file !!!) I worked out
that it needs an IP address, and not a hostname (is this another
setup 'problem' ?) and have it seemingly working.

So : Cheers Erik.

How are you lookinf for the file /root/.rhosts ?
regular ls will _not_ show it.
Do a ls -al /hosts to see all files, including those beginning with "."

Maurice
