Same with 1.3.90 or 2.0.18. (I'm using the same kernel as on Intel,
meaning just the standard Linus-Kernel.)

Yep it is slow and then usually comes in bursts.

I thought about this, and I've also tried using two converters 25->9 and
9->25 pins to prevent this. Didn't help it :(

The problem seems to be seldom triggered, but I've got in the course of
some months mails from some guys who have similiar problems. They usually
solved it by putting a Intel box beside the AXPs, that let the Intel box
handle modems.
