gcc broken with libc-axp-961122-bin.tar.gz ?

gcc 2.7.2 from redhat 4.0 seems to be somewhat broken with
libc-axp-961122-bin.tar.gz, downloaded from ftp.redhat.com:/pub/alphabits.

Trying to build the kernel, i get messages like:

make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/kernel'
gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -g -O2 -pipe -mno-fp-regs -fno-omit-frame-pointer -c sched.c
cc1: /tmp/cca08791.i: No such file or directory
cpp: output pipe has been closed

this looks like gcc calls cpp with output directed to a pipe, but
cc1 expects input from a file, doesn't it ?

BTW, is there another way to get NIS running instead of trying glibc-snapshots ?
