DEC Multia (aka UDB) - problems booting

Greetings all. I have just obtained a DEC Multia box (aka UDB) and would
like to run Linux on it (of course). I am having problems booting the
machine - every kernel that I try falls over just after recognising the
SCSI controller (NCR53c810) with an endless loop of timeout + scsi reset
errors.
The axp FAQ and many other docs say that this machine is supported - is
there some trick to getting one of these working, or do I have defective
hardware?

Cheers, Anthony
