tar problem with remote magtape ?

I just tried to access a remote SCSI tape from Linux/AXP for the first time
using

# rpm -qf /bin/tar
tar-1.11.8-8
# export TAPE=turtle:/dev/tape
# rpm -qf /bin/mt
mt-st-0.4-2
# mt stat
turtle:/dev/tape: No such file or directory
# tar tvRi
tar: memory violation at pc=155556c96e0 rp=15555703c04 (bad address = 00000000)
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

so "mt" doesn't support rmt at all and tar dumps core :-(
"rdump" and "rrestore" work fine (but don't use environment variable "TAPE")

here is the tail of strace output (10.2.170.191 is "turtle"):

open("/etc/hosts", O_RDONLY) = 6
fstat(6, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=1859, ...}) = 0
read(6, "127.0.0.1 localhost "..., 8192) = 1859
close(6) = 0
open("/root/.netrc", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
socket(PF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, IPPROTO_IP) = 6
connect(6, {sin_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(512), sin_addr=inet_addr("10.2.170.191")}, 16) = 0
write(6, "\0", 1) = 1
--- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) ---
+++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
