Enlarging buf size for better eth thruput

There was a comment made on the list a while back about changing a buffer
size to get better throughput over ethernet. I have my UDB hooked up to a
small lan with two other PC's. When I'm transferring files, sometimes I get
~700kb/s (usually the first file transfered) and most other times I get
~150kb/s reported under smbclient. Is this buffer size in the kernel sw and
if so, where?
Thanks.
