It was the net/slip.c file with all standard compile options.
I didn't change anything, just config'ed for the SLIP and CSLIP.

Since you ask so decidedly, I re-tried compilation of 2.1.7, and
found that it didn't compiler because of an unknown pseudo-op
.section in kernel/printk.c. Re-thinking I now think it was 2.1.6
that had several compile error including this signal 6 error.
