Upgrading my kernel..

I have found that I cannot compile kernels from the source I get from
places like sunsite (where I used to get my i386 kernels).. Someone told
me that you had to get a patch to get new kernels to compile.. Where
can I find these patches?? I was also told that there would soon be an
rpm that had updates to libraries that would make this patch obsolete..
It this true? Where and when can I expect to see this rpm.???
