Be careful! I bought an 8X external SCSI-2 CD-ROM for my UDB (a
PHILIPS) and it almost NEVER works! :-( I've used both NCR driver in
the 2.0.24 kernels, and I still have trouble mounting the drive or it
eventually times out and I'm not able to access.

Is there maybe an option when compiling the kernel that I'm not setting
properly? I either get a bad superblock error, or my machine just
hangs.
