Any chance this is a *real* simple network, like 2 machines? If the UDB
doesn't see a carrier on the line, it believes it to be unconnected, and
goes into default mode. Twisted pair is a bit more reliable, in terms of
detection/default when it starts the controller up.
What I've done with a two machine network is:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network stop
on both, then
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start
on both at the same time, or as near as you can make it. That seems to work
most of the time.
Twisted pair with a "null modem" cable between two machines works quite
well with the latest kernels, since the de4x5 driver on Alphas now defaults
to TP when it senses no media (it didn't work well before; my fault).
