Purchase of an alpha system

I am currently in the process of drafting a proposal for the
purchase of an Alpha-based system for use as an advanced communications
server in a residential setting. We are looking to introduce students to
emerging technologies such as videoconferencing and multimedia publishing
in their infancy. Understandably, I am looking for pointers to pricing
information and suggestions on hardware requirements for a multi-user
system that will serve on the order of 150 students (most will need only
text-based access to email, but we hope to support more as students
become interested). Also, what are your experiences with the stability
of Linux on an Alpha as compared to Commercial OSs such as DEC Unix?
Thanks in advance,
Vik Bajaj
